“The first motor I ever delivered on television, and boy was I nervous!”

Coman

Snap-on Tool Bike
“The first motor that we ever integrated a part into the cylinder, and it worked.”

Miller Electric

“If you look in the background in the door window you will see my friend Jimbo, who took the ride with me, and was elated to be on tv.”

Liberty Bike

“This motor was plated with original copper ingots, sent from France with the Statue of Liberty for future repairs… now that was fucking cool, except that it was French!”

Mikey / Vinnie Bike
“What a cluster fuck! Harley Davidson sent a “kit”, Vinny asked me for help- I said there should have been adjustable pushrods, but with no oil in the lifters, the pushrods spun freely, and the editing made me look like an asshole…”

I, Robot Bike
“We were asked to make a one-off motor, they said the bike would never be ridden, but of course it was. Pauley said, “This was the coolest running motor he had ever ridden,” then Vinny said, “No shit there is no fins to dissipate any heat!”

Carroll Shelby Bike
“Talk about editing… they didn’t show me screaming at Vinny, saying that a gravity fed oil pump will not work as a siphon like the car motors he is used to working on, and it almost came to blows! Another sleepless night…Nick helped through the night and bailed on me in the morning- you can see me in the episode look up like, where the hell is Nick???? THANKS NICK!!!!”

Lance Armstrong Bike

“Pretty exciting shit, the complete film crew came to my shop in CT., we had to lock the doors because people saw Paul Senior, Paul Junior, and Mikey walk in and were trying to break into the shop.”

May 15, 2009: HEAD PORTINGBY HAND??

H&L Performance is famous for their head porting, all done by hand, conventional tool room service, milling and turning

IT’S A DYING ART FORM - HAND-PORTED CYLINDER HEADS…   The process of modifying the intake and exhaust ports of an internal combustion engine to improve the quality and quantity of the air flow, is a task that today’s generation of techs would rather leave to machines… but there are a handful of rebel-minded innovators left in the United States that continue the art of head porting by hand.

Is faster always better?  Today, in the rush of instant gratification, most people C&C-port their heads,  meaning they take a cast head, which is of course subject to casting imperfections, and then they have a C&C machine port it, running off of a computer program that ports the heads, one after another, exactly the same.

Anyone who knows anything about high performance engines, knows this…  no matter how well-built the engine and no matter how well-planned the part configuration, without proper head flow, every effort towards performance will be futile.

MACHINE vs. MAN… Customized parts, like heads for instance, takes time!  So, where’s the middle ground in all of this?   Well, H&L believes excellence can be achieved through that perfect combination of old-school precision and  state-of-the-art knowledge, machinery and tooling.

Head porting by hand is a unique shop experience for every project.  It allows for correction of any imperfections created during the casting process. Best of all, hand porting includes the experienced touch and feel of a machine shop artist,  like H&L Performance’s highly elusive (and widely respected) Tom Haner, who  has been head porting by hand for thirty-five years.

Customizing your bike is an investment in a piece of art; a show of excellence when ridden and it’s worn like badge of honor to represent the long history of the motorcycle engine evolution. Hence the saying, “Don’t rush the beauty if you want to feel the beast”.

H&L Performance’s heads are each flow-tested on a top-of-the-line Superflow Computerized SF-600 Flow Bench, with velocity probes that ensure maximum flow with optimal velocity. With well over 50 years of combined experience, and a machine shop that offers the best equipment money can buy,  H&L Performance has perfected the art of engine rebuilds, from stock configurations to boring and stroking to reach absolute maximum potential

April 22, 2009:    H&L PERFORMANCE HAS LAUNCHED A NEW WEBSITE!!  H&L’s new site compliments their newest engine, “The Animal” !!

Over this winter H&L Performance, like so many other small businesses, took a long hard look at the economy and decided to revamp! H&L Performance unveiled their newest creation dubbed, The Animal, which is a Pan Head style with an old school look that won rave reviews by both industry insiders, as well as the general public at The 2009 International Motorcycle Show in New York City.   To compliment their new engine, H&L has launched a brand new website with interactive media, as well as the ability for do-it-yourselfers to preview and purchase all of H&L’s 100% American Made Products online.

Although H&L Performance became famous for supplying engines used by some of the biggest names in the business, such as Orange County ChoppersThunder CyclesMGS, etc. most people didn’t know that Tom Haner and Joe Biker Malloy have always done engine rebuilds, and that H&L Performance kits and headwork are surpassed by none.

If you have a Harley-built engine from 1936 to present, they can fix it! This includes all Flat Heads, Knuckle Heads, Pan Heads, Shovel Heads, Evolution and Twin Cam style engines.

So, visit our new home at www.handlengines.com and check it out!

April 19, 2009:   MOTORCYCLE ENGINES, AND THE LIFESTYLE - Joe Molloy (Joe Biker) and Christine (”krit) Campbell (READ MORE)

JESSE JAMES’ BIKE “Mighty Whitey’s Wheelie Machine”

We wanted to get our motors to the West Coast, and a friend of mine from a predominate motorcycle club said he had a friend who was close to Jessie and could hook us up, but we’d have to send a motor out for them to try. When I got in touch with Chopper Dave and Bill Dodge they said not to bother sending a motor because ever motor sent tot hem they end up sending back blown up. I said that obviously the motors sent to you don’t know what the fuck they are doing.. you will not blow our motor up. Period. I sent the motor and told them to call once it was running. They called us back and said it sounded great, and that they took it around the block- I asked what they thought, they said they didn’t know because it wasn’t broken in yet. I said go out and beat he living fuck out of it and if it blows up I'll know I didn’t build it right- so they did-

They called back an hour later to tell me I was nuts, the motor was an animal and for 3 weeks they tried incessantly to blow up our motor, and they couldn’t. Our motor was featured on motorcycle mania 3 with Jesse James riding it on the highway, pulling wheelies at 65mph… it is still on his website listed under Mighty Whitey’s Wheelie Machine. We proved our point. Enough said….

ROBBIE KNEIVEL’S WILD RIDE

I showed up to film delivery of the motor, but Robbie wasn’t there, his people said he was always late. I figured I already wasted a day of work being out of the shop, so I asked them where is the closest place to have a beer. ½ way thru my 2nd beer I get a phone call that Robbie had arrived. Figures. On our way back we stopped at McDonalds because no one had eaten, and we got back, everybody was kissing his ass because of his stardom, except me ‘cause I really couldn’t give a fuck. I was then told I was up 1st for interviews, Robbie came over to brush french fry matter out of my beard, I swatted his hand away and said don’t fucking touch me… He smiled and said, “you don’t want your mother to see you on tv like that do you?” I said, “good point!” I did my interview, then stepped outside for a cigarette, shortly thereafter Robbie came out for a smoke, he rolled his eyes, tipped his head the way Robbie does, and said, “what the fuck is up with those people?” I said, “what do you want me to tell you, they are kissing your ass”.

Robbie invited into his motor home for a drink, to which I said, " hell yeah", and asked, “you got Jim Beam”, and he said, “I have Jack Daniels, Jack Daniels and mustard”. So I said “I’ll have a JD”. ½ through the bottle of JD his people came to find him, and I can tell you this- no other interviews were completed. Then, just like that- he left. But not before we exchanged numbers…

I warned him that if we hung out we’d end up in jail together, to which he responded, “I’ve been arrested in 16 different cities, why would one more make a difference”.. That is Robbie, he is just a cool guy…
